One Response to “Eyes on the prize?”

  1. Steven, I agree with your comment about inspiring people. I also think that, now science has become so much more in recent times about taking a multi-disciplinary approach to issues and problems – scientists & engineers across the disciplines working in teams – that the idea of handing out individual prizes in science and engineering are counter to this. We need to generate a culture of collaboration and cooperation. Having said that there is nothing wrong with competition. I know that down the years Nobel prizes have been given to teams of scientists, chemists, etc, but as you also say awards like the Nobel are only open to the very few. I wouldn’t want an ‘awards-for-all’ culture to creep in, but there needs to be in place aspirational prizes at all levels of education and study, from early years learning, all the way up to Nobel level.
